FACEBOOK

I have joined Facebook!

Now I have 45 friends including my children and my wife! Comments on my Facebook wall include:

  • ·         “Wow… you have a Facebook?!?”
  • ·         “You got Facebook! How youthful of you!”
  • ·         “This officially makes u the coolest preacher since Jesus.”
  • ·         “Hello to my favorite pastor! Wow, you are so modern and tech savvy – you have Facebookd AND aim!!!”

Facebook, a social networking website, launched on February, 2004, now has over 34 million active members worldwide. It is the 6th most visited website in September 2007 and the number one site for photos in the United States. And I decided to check it out!

I find that there are over 200 FBCC’s members in the Facebook community. Many of them are youth and young people. Some of them spend hours every day on Facebook, keeping touch with hundreds of friends. What a vehicle to connect with these members! And I joked with my daughter that I am going to share the vision of the church through Facebook. I may even upload my sermons on it. I am not trying to be cool! I just want to spread the Word!

In every generation, there are new ways to connect! Jesus connected with the people on the hillside and preaching from a boat. Paul wrote letters to the churches. Jonathan Edward wrote his sermons on the horseback. Billy Graham broadcasted his crusades on TV to reach the millions. Now almost every church in America has a well-designed web-page. I am following Paul’s advice: “In every circumstance, preach Christ in every way!”

And I wish that every parent spends the time to get into their kids’ worlds to understand them in their own language. Many a time, the cultural gap and the language gap have created walls within the family. As parents, our first job is to understand them and thus gain the trust to be heard. It does take time and effort, like learning to get on Facebook!

So, I begin the journey into Facebook…

Invite me as your friend if you have Facebook. Love to keep in touch with you.

More to come!
